What is EPF Registration?
EPF Registration in West Godavari District — in brief
EPF (Employees' Provident Fund) Registration is mandatory for establishments with 20 or more employees under the Employees' Provident Funds and Miscellaneous Provisions Act, 1952. The employer contributes 12% of basic salary + DA to EPF and an equal 12% from the employee is deducted. Voluntary registration is also available for employers with fewer than 20 employees. EPF registration is mandatory once your establishment has 20 or more employees (including contract and temporary workers). You must register within one month of reaching this threshold. Voluntary registration is available for smaller establishments.
The employer contributes 12% of the employee's basic salary + DA. Of this, 8.33% goes to the Employees' Pension Scheme (EPS) and 3.67% to the EPF account. The employee also contributes 12% of basic + DA, which goes entirely to the EPF account.
Employees earning basic salary + DA above ₹15,000 at the time of joining can opt out of EPF. However, if they were already enrolled before their salary crossed ₹15,000, they must continue contributing. This is a one-time option and cannot be changed later.
After registration, employers must upload the Electronic Challan cum Return (ECR) on the EPFO Unified Portal by the 15th of each month and pay the combined employer + employee contributions. We manage the monthly ECR and challan for all our payroll clients.
ESIC (Employees' State Insurance Corporation) registration is mandatory for establishments with 10 or more employees earning up to ₹21,000 per month in most states. EPF and ESIC registrations are often done simultaneously. We coordinate both registrations as part of a single engagement.
Delayed EPF registration can result in back-dating of contributions with interest and damages of 5%–25% per annum under Section 14B of the EPF Act, plus potential prosecution. We recommend registering as soon as the 20-employee threshold is crossed.
